The AWARE Mnemonic helps ensure the “voice of the child” is consistently heard & considered in situations involving child protection. It provides a framework for professionals to make more accurate risk assessments and better understand a child’s needs, ultimately contributing to more effective child protection outcomes. Although the mnemonic was developed to assist police officers to gather information about children as part of their assessment and reporting role, the mnemonic is a valuable asset that could/ should be considered by all agencies.
Learning from CPRs suggests the use of the mnemonic could have highlighted the need to consider the child(ren) whereabouts and daily lived experience, for example, whilst witnessing Domestic Abuse and Anti-Social Behaviour.
Listening to and capturing the voice of a child is essential for effective safeguarding practice. The voice of a child can include both what is said and unsaid, verbal and non-verbal indicators.
