All children have the right to live lives free from abuse and neglect but recent events highlight, yet again, how difficult it can be for so many adults to recognise, and act on concerns about the safety or welfare of a child. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what’s best for each child. The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised. This course is aimed at people acting in the ‘Designated Person’ role working in a variety of organisations including schools, children’s daycare and residential settings, also services providing support to children and families in the voluntary and private sector.

Graded Care Profile 2: Measuring Care, Helping Families – NSPCC Event

Website: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/gcp2-measuring-care-helping-families-mesur-gofal-helpu-teuluoedd-conwy-tickets-33987786384
Venue: Conwy Business Centre
May 12

You are invited to attend a free information session on Graded Care Profile 2

Neglect is one of the most dangerous forms of abuse, and can have serious and long–lasting effects for children and their families. For the last two decades it has been the most common reason for a child to be on the child protection register in Wales. But it can often be difficult to identify neglect, which can make it hard for decisions to be made about future care. Yet with the right assessment tool in place, we can measure the quality of care been given to a child, and make it easier for professionals to spot anything that is putting a child at risk of harm. There is an exciting opportunity for a small number of Welsh local authorities/safeguarding boards to work with the NSPCC to further test the Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2) tool in Wales

Information sessions are scheduled for the following dates:

Cultural Awareness in Safeguarding Children

Organised by: Children in Wales
Venue: Rhyl
Nov 16

16 November 2016, Rhyl – Book Online

A one-day course

Understanding cultural differences is an important component in effective working with families and children. Practitioners and managers can be reluctant to address child welfare concerns because they fear being accused of racism, intolerance or prejudice. Getting the balance right between cultural sensitivity and making Westernised judgements on child welfare is difficult.

The aim of this course is to raise awareness of cultural, ethnic and religious identities when considering safeguarding issues within asylum seeking, refugee and migrant families. It will increase the understanding of particular safeguarding risks within families and communities and enhance confidence in addressing safeguarding issues with families.

The course is for anyone working with asylum seeking, refugee or other BAME migrant families, in statutory, social care, health or education, community groups and refugee community organisations, including Flying Start, Families First, Communities First, IFST, etc…

This course will include:

  • Child protection through a cultural lens
  • Cultural perspectives on parenting in immigrant families arriving in Wales
  • Female Genital Mutilation, ‘Honour’ Violence, Forced Marriage, Abuse Linked to a belief in Witchcraft
  • Promoting positive parenting in immigrant families

Cheryl Martin has worked with asylum seekers and refugees over a number of years and developed this course from her experiences of working with families and safeguarding children within a cultural context.

She has previously worked as Children’s Services Manager at Welsh Women’s Aid, the national umbrella organisation for domestic abuse in Wales and has experience of delivering training in a youth justice setting. Cheryl is a qualified counsellor and conflict resolution practitioner, working as an independent mediator for a number of years. She has been a Trustee and chair of two charities over the past 12 years.

As a Level 3 Accredited Trainer Cheryl has delivered training in different settings to a wide range of audiences, including multi-agency training, statutory and voluntary agencies and professionals.

Keep Kids Safe 2017

Organised by: Children in Wales, in partnership with Public Health Wales
Nov 9

Children in Wales, in partnership with Public Health Wales,

has developed a new child safety toolkit for 2017

Aimed at reducing unintentional injuries in the under 5’s, this exciting new toolkit provides your organisation and practitioners with all of the resources needed to deliver a whole year of child safety information and advice to parents.

The toolkit includes attractive, printed calendars for your parents and a USB stick for your organisation. The USB resource is divided into months, with each month directly supporting the calendar messages parents will see on a daily basis.  For each month there is a team briefing, a step-by-step interactive group session plan, handouts, poster downloads, twitter feeds, text messages and face book uploads.

Issues addressed in the toolkit include nicotine poisoning, falls, scalds, blind cords and nappy sacks.  Everything has been developed for you, from the group delivery session plans to the ready to use text for your social media and everything is available in Welsh and English.

The Keep Kids Safe toolkit was developed to address the needs of practitioners, who stated; “We know we should do something, but we haven’t got the time to develop anything and we’re not sure what to do or how to address it.  We need something we can pick up and run with”.

It’s not just practitioners who have had their say, parents have also played a huge role in the development of the resources.  They have advised on details such as calendar images, language used, the practical advice they need and also how they want practitioners to support them.

Whether you are new to child safety or are already addressing the issues, the easy to use format of this toolkit provides a structured, informed approach to unintentional injury prevention.

The Keep Kids Safe toolkit will be launched on 9 November 2016 and is available from as little as £195.  However, orders received before 27 October 2016 will receive significant discounts.

Pre-launch costs: From £195    (For orders received before 27 October 2016)

Post-launch costs: From £245    (For orders received after 27 October 2016) For more information, please visit: http://www.childreninwales.org.uk/our-work/accident-prevention/keep-kids-safe-2017/

Introduction to Soft Outcomes and Distance Travelled

Organised by: Children in Wales
Venue: Rhyl
Nov 3

03 November 2016, Rhyl – Book Online

A one-day course

The Social Services and Wellbeing Act (Wales) 2014 came into force on 6th April this year and places a new focus on services supporting the well-being outcomes of the people they are working with.  The term ‘wellbeing’ is used to refer to the quality of people’s lives, and covers both subjective and objective aspects.  Subjective well-being focuses on soft outcomes such as how people are feeling and how they perceive their lives and personal goals.  Objective well-being focuses on the conditions which affect those feelings such as health or education which are easier to measure in hard outcomes. Both of these perspectives are valuable for understanding children’s well-being.

This course is relevant for managers and practitioners who wish to demonstrate that their intervention has made a difference to outcomes for people they work with.  Budgets are tight and all organisations need to consider economy and efficiency, but it is important to keep a focus on the effectiveness of services. This course will look at measuring the soft outcomes that your intervention has achieved for the people you work with. Participants will explore a range of methods that can be used with all groups – from children and young people to adults.

The course will include:

  • Clarification of the terminology used when evaluating the impact of your services
  • An exploration of why you need to measure qualitative information and how to do it
  • Considering what soft outcomes are relevant to your setting
  • Exploring a range of methods for measuring soft outcomes
  • How to assess the distance travelled by users of your service
  • Using information on outcomes to improve service delivery

“Keeping Our Children Safe” – Training for Designated Person for Child Protection

Organised by: Children in Wales
Venue: Rhyl
Oct 11

11 & 12 October, Rhyl – Book Online

A two-day course

All children have the right to live lives free from abuse and neglect but recent events highlight, yet again, how difficult it can be for so many adults to recognise, and act on concerns about the safety or welfare of a child.  The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all organisations concerned with children should work towards what’s best for each child.  The Designated Person for Child Protection has a vital role within organisations helping to ensure that adequate safeguards are in place and that necessary action is taken when concerns about a child are raised.

This two day training course will consider:

  • The role of the Designated Person and how this can be incorporated into your organisation
  • Legislation and guidance on safeguarding children and young people, particularly within the Welsh context
  • Essential safeguarding measures that need to be in place
  • The ‘abuse of trust’ and how to remain alert to potential sexual offences within the organisation
  • Assessing concerns about a child and making a referral to social services if necessary
  • The statutory child protection system and what may be expected of you
  • Confidentiality and good record keeping
  • Diversity and the additional vulnerabilities for some children

About the Trainer

Claire Sharp, Senior Training Officer

Claire Sharp has worked with children and young people, in the voluntary and statutory sector, for over twenty years and currently works as Children in Wales’ Training Officer. Claire spent many years working in the field of domestic abuse, directly supporting children and young people in refuges and in the community, before moving on to manage Children’s Services at Welsh Women’s Aid. She has an ongoing interest in encouraging education and learning, in its broadest sense, having worked both as a primary teacher and in the supervision and assessment of student social workers in child and family teams.

Claire now trains practitioners from a variety of services, on a wide range of issues, including children’s rights and child protection. Claire has also delivered Early Support training, a programme aimed to improve recognition and support for disabled children and their families through a multi-agency approach with the child at the centre. Claire is a volunteer with UCAN Productions, a performance and creative arts co-operative for blind and partially sighted children, young people and their friends, supporting the children to have opportunities to play and socialise and develop skills and confidence.

Mike Mainwaring, Training Officer

Mike Mainwaring has worked with Children and Young People for over 20 years.  Specialising in substance misuse, youth homelessness, participation and children’s rights.  He is a qualified trainer and has trained children, young people and adults on substance misuse, LGBT issues, children’s rights, participation, dealing with difficult behaviour, safeguarding and child protection, Child Sexual Exploitation and boundaries.  He has also developed and run youth lead research projects.    He has worked in various settings such as street drug projects, residential rehabilitation, outreach work, play, youth work, manged housing projects and run youth councils.  He has an art background, working with young people in distress through the medium of art and exhibiting his own work about social issues.

2016 Alcohol Concern Cymru Conference : Saving Lives

Organised by: Alcohol Concern Cymru
Venue: The Grand Hotel, Swansea
Sep 22

Understanding the links between alcohol and suicide  will be the topic of the annual conference of Alcohol Concern Cymru on 22nd September 2016  at the Grand Hotel, Swansea.

Each year in Wales, between 300 and 350 people die from suicide, about three times the number killed in road accidents. Alcohol use is often implicated in suicides and non-fatal self-harm. A fifth of all suicides are thought to be from people dependent on alcohol, and heavier drinkers are significantly more likely to suffer depression and anxiety. This one-day conference will encourage discussion of key questions including what exactly is the association between alcohol and suicide, who are the groups most at-risk, and how do we best offer support to family and friends after a suicide.

Conference delegates will hear from leading experts in the field, including Dr Eve Griffin from the National Suicide Research Foundation Ireland, Dr Ann John from Swansea University and Dr Roger T Webb from the Centre for Mental Health and Safety, Manchester.

Supporting Parents to Protect Children Online

Organised by: Children in Wales
Venue: Rhyl
Jul 12

12 July 2016, Rhyl – Book Online

This one day course aims to deliver a balanced, non-sensationalist approach to help professionals inform and support parents in protecting children when using the internet.   The course is aimed at a wide variety of practitioners working with children and families including those working for Families First, Communities First, Flying Start and foster carers.

Many parents today feel unable to protect their children online. They feel powerless when faced with a technology they do not fully understand while their children seem completely at home with hi- tech, web enabled gadgets. How can people working with families help parents to better protect their children?

With a constant flow of stories about online abuse in the media some parents may overreact restricting access to everything, while others just feel overwhelmed, keep their fingers crossed and hope it won’t happen to their child.  Is there a safe way for children to use the internet’s opportunities for learning and fun, while also avoiding the risks?  How can we help parents support their children’s safe use of modern technology?

The course will look at some of the real risks and dangers and debate the concerns, while also dispelling some of the myths and hoaxes.  There will be an opportunity for practitioners to discuss issues that parents are raising and to have some hands on experience at creating safe settings on some of the most popular devices used by children.

The course will explore:

  • Real violence and online violence
  • Talking to children about porn
  • Possible addiction to online activities
  • Social media, grooming and sexting
  • Spotting warning signs of online abuse
  • Grooming and radicalisation
  • Censorship and identifying age appropriate materials
  • Parental controls and how to set them

About the Trainer

Jon Trew is an experienced child protection trainer having delivered training to groups as diverse as housing maintenance staff, dentists and childcare workers. Jon has wide experience of working with children of all ages and backgrounds, having managed a children’s center, a nursery, an after school club and holiday play-care schemes.  As early as the 1990’s, Jon was an enthusiast for using computers to work with children as young as four and five and has continued to promote safe ways for young children to access the internet and other electronic media.  Jon has experience of working face to face with children as well as a deep understanding of the technical challenges it presents.  Jon said “A study in October 2011 found on average, the children who use computers started doing so at age 3 ½, while half of children under 8 in the US had access to a mobile device like a smartphone, an iPad or other tablet. The internet offers huge opportunities for our children to explore, learn and enjoy, however the benefits of this revolution are matched by threats and difficulties.  Waiting until children reach their early teens before we consider internet safety is just too late. Parents, teachers and all child care professionals must rise to this challenge and ensure they are able to guide, monitor and protect our children through this new age”.

“Keeping Our Children Safe” – Designated Person for Child Protection

Organised by: Children in Wales
Jul 5

05 & 06 July, Cardiff

Book Online

Harmful Traditional Practices

Organised by: Children in Wales
Venue: Cardiff
Jun 22

22 June 2016, Cardiff – Online booking

A half-day course

Traditional cultural practices reflect the values and beliefs held by members of a community, some of which are harmful to specific groups, such as children and women and that come under the title of gender based violence. Some practices are endemic to a particular area of the world, while others are more widespread and rooted in cultural and religious norms.  These are often undergirded by patriarchal interpretations of religious texts and male domination.

Wales has a large and varied BAME population and some traditional customs are still practiced by communities living in Wales.

This half day course will consider ‘honour’ based violence and other harmful traditional practices that affect children and young people, including female genital mutilation, forced/early marriage, ‘honour ‘ violence and abuse linked to the belief in witchcraft.  The course will also touch on lesser known issues such as son preference, bride price, infanticide and traditional health practices that may be seen as harmful within a Western context.

About the Trainer:

Cheryl has over 20 years’ experience of working in social care, in a variety of roles including foster care, child protection, youth offending, equality and diversity and domestic abuse. Her experience and knowledge of child sexual exploitation comes from her work as a foster carer, in youth offending and with charitable organisations working with children and young people.  She has been a qualified trainer for 8 years and delivers a variety of training to a wide range of professionals and practitioners. She is also a qualified counsellor and independent mediator.

2016 Alcohol Concern Cymru Conference : Saving Lives ( 22 September 2016)

Organised by: Alcohol Concern Cymru
Venue: Grand Hotel, Swansea

At  Alcohol Concern Cymru 2016 conference in Swansea,  there will be discussion and exploration of  the complex relationship between alcohol consumption and suicide. Conference delegates will hear from leading experts in the field, including Dr Eve Griffin from the National Suicide Research Foundation Ireland, Dr Ann John from Swansea University and Dr Roger T Webb from the Centre for Mental Health and Safety, Manchester.   http://www.alcoholconcern.org.uk/swansea2016/
