A one-day course

21 March 2017, Conwy – Book Online

The training will explore LGBT issues and young people.  The process of coming out, issues for young people such as bullying, gender identity and sexuality.  How to support young people whether gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender or questioning young people.  It will deal with issues such as safeguarding, self-harm, substance misuse and Child Sexual Exploitation.  This will be conducted using a rights based approach.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Have an understanding LGBTQ issues
  • Gain ways of supporting LGBTQ young people
  • Gain knowledge on safeguarding LGBTQ young people
  • Gain practical skills in identifying young people who are vulnerable to Child Sexual Exploitation

Who is it aimed at?

Practitioners, Managers and Policy Makers from all sectors and all organisations keen to explore how their work can support LGBTQ young people.  Examine new trends in gender identity and sexuality and how this impacts on practice.

About the trainer

Mike Mainwaring, Training Officer

Mike Mainwaring has worked with Children and Young People for over 20 years. Specialising in substance misuse, youth homelessness, participation and children’s rights. He is a qualified trainer and has trained children, young people and adults on substance misuse, LGBT issues, children’s rights, participation, dealing with difficult behaviour, safeguarding and child protection, Child Sexual Exploitation and boundaries. He has also developed and run youth lead research projects. He has worked in various settings such as street drug projects, residential rehabilitation, outreach work, play, youth work, manged housing projects and run youth councils. He has an art background, working with young people in distress through the medium of art and exhibiting his own work about social issues.
