A one day course

This course is for all practitioners working with young people who want to increase their understanding of why young people self harm, and how best to support those who do. Research has shown that self harm is viewed as a highly sensitive topic by professionals, parents and young people, with issued regarding stigma and the misunderstanding of causes leading to uncertainty as to how best to support young people who self harm. Understanding self harm is therefore crucial in providing effective support to those in need.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand common myths surrounding self harm, as well as issues regarding stigma
  • Understand and appreciate the perspective of other professionals, parents and young people
  • Assess and manage risk, understand the concept of harm minimisation, and be better able to explore alternatives to self harm within the context of your role
  • Apply and manage risk, understand the concept of harm minimisation, and be better able to explore alternatives to self harm within the context of your role
  • Apply proven strategies aimed at developing the resilience of those vulnerable to self harm
  • Develop a self harm policy tailored to your needs, designed to provide clear information and guidance
  • Explore and reflect upon your own feelings towards self harm, and consider how such views influence your practice
